To celebrate, I wanted to share a few fascinating facts about this extraordinary butterfly. The Blue Morpho is one of the largest butterflies in the world, with a wingspan of up to 15 cm. It is found in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, including the Amazon region, and is best known for its luminous, shimmering blue wings. But here is the wonder: it is not actually blue! The colour comes from the butterfly’s wing structure: microscopic, diamond-shaped scales reflect and scatter light in a way that creates that electric blue glow. As the butterfly moves, the colour appears to shift and flicker. In other words, we are not simply seeing blue; we are seeing light doing something magical! Blue butterflies are often associated with luck, positive change, calm, and emotional healing. Because they are rare in nature, encountering one can feel like a small blessing, a sign that a new season may be beginning. The underside of the wings, however, tells a different story, one of survival and adaptation: the colour is a light brown, and the patterns mimic the surface of a dead leaf when the butterfly is resting on the ground. I usually sketch on standard printing paper and then transfer my drawing onto watercolour paper using a light pad. I start with the body and one of the wings, then sketch the other wing to ensure both sides of the butterfly are as symmetrical as possible. Fun Fact: This symmetry comes from their shared genetic blueprint and the precise way their wings develop during metamorphosis.
