The Paper Kite (Idea leuconoe), also known as the Ricepaper or Large Tree Nymph, is found across parts of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. It favours humid lowland habitats, from rainforests and forest edges to coastal mangroves. Its slow, floating flight is one of its most recognisable features, as though a piece of paper were drifting through the air, and how it earned the name Paper Kite!
Those striking black-and-white markings also warn predators to keep their distance. As caterpillars, they feed on Parsonsia vines and absorb chemical compounds that make both the larvae and adult butterflies unpleasant for birds to eat. A gentle-looking butterfly, yet beautifully equipped for survival.
Original watercolour painting on Arches cold pressed 300 gsm paper. Size: 9 × 12 inches. The artwork is sold unframed. Styled images are for display purposes only. A certificate of authenticity is also included.
